Next up on our tour of best of Hampstead and surrounding areas for your sweat needs is Caro Pilates at On the Lane in Belsize Park. This gorgeous space is a breath of fresh air and the experience starts the minute you walk in the door. From the serene entry space with its dark walls and leafy motif to the studio itself which hosts a beautiful windowed ceiling offering tons of natural light flooding down over the reformer machines, everything about this space screams relaxation. But don’t be fooled by the serenity, this workout is fierce.
As a yoga teacher and self-proclaimed gym bunny I’ll admit I was a bit nervous walking down to my lesson with Caroline. Pilates is not in my comfort zone. Caroline eased my nerves from the minute we met with her radiant smile that goes all the way to her eyes. You can tell she is passionate and excited to share her love of Pilates. I was lucky enough to have a one to one mat session and she worked me through a series of postures that stretched and worked every inch of my body. Helping me to link the breath with the movements, she talked me through many of the moves and corrected my form as I went through. I especially loved the hoop sequence which worked my core and my legs at the same time. Full disclosure, my legs were burning by the end of the lunge and squat section of the workout leaving me to realize my everyday workouts aren’t hitting all the muscles I want.
As the session began to wind down, we did a relaxing stretch and breath sequence that left me ready for a nap. I could not have had a more lovely way to spend an hour working out and finding my core. I left feeling a little taller, a bit sweaty, and somehow exceptionally relaxed. If you are looking for a new experience or a new studio to get your sweat on, I definitely recommend trying out On the Lane.
